Versailles 13 –
Minster 6
Minster’s football team showed plenty of
promise but not quite enough offensive power in dropping a 13-6 decision to a
sharp, hard-running Versailles Tiger eleven.
Versailles took the opening kickoff and began
to march toward the Wildcat goal. Two
15-yard penalties within the 30-yard line pushed the Tigers back. The Wildcats took to the air after two
running plays as Garmann hit Huelskamp
fpr 40 yards and Froning
pitched to Tebbe for 12. But the Tigers stiffened and took the ball on
downs. Two plays later Garmann recovered a fumble on the Versailles 20, but a pass
interception thwarted the scoring attempt.
With about six minutes remaining in the half
Versailles, led by the hard-running Johnny Mills, picked up six straight first
downs with Mills driving over for the score with less than a minute left. The extra point was wide, and Versailles led
at the half 6-0.
Minster started to march in the second
half. Don Schmitmeyer
ran the kickoff back to the Tiger 35.
Three running plays put the ball of the 18 before Horstman fumbled and
Versailles’ Oliver recovered. Mills and Kueterman each picked up a first down, and then Deagle passed to Ehlers on the Minster 10. Mills raced around left end for the
score. Mills’ kick was good and Versailles led 13-0.
Don Schmitmeyer, who
had been with the squad only one week, returned the ensuing kickoff 72 yards to
score. Seger’s kick was wide.
Eddie Garmann got loose
late for a 25-yard gain to put the ball at the Versailles 35. But an interception by the Tiger’s Schweppe
stopped the drive and allowed the Tiger’s to run out the rest of the clock.
