Minster 13 –
Bradford 0
Minster picked up their first win of the season
by stopping the Railroads in their home opener.
Thw Wildcat defense
performed well for the second straight game.
The huge Minster forward wall held the visitors to a total of 64 yards
on the ground.
The Cats' first score started on their own
27. On the last play of the first
quarter Johnny Froning picked up 19 yards to the
46. Ed Garmann
smashed over tackle to the Bradford 45.
Don Schmitmeyer drove 23 yards to the 22. Garmann picked up
12 and Horstman 8 to put the ball on the 2, and Garmann
drove over for the score. An attempted
pass for the extra point was incomplete.
Froning began hitting with
passes in the secons stanza. The tall quarterback hit Tebbe
for 15 yards and Huelskamp for 25. Garman ran for 10 more before Froning pitched to Tebbe who made
a great one-handed catch in the end zone, but the score was nullified by a
15-yard penalty. Bradford then
intercepted an aerial as the half ended.
The Wildcats threatened several times in the
third canto but numerous penalties and some fine punting by Bradford kept them
from crossing the payoff stripe.
Minster picked up its final tally in the last
period. With 4th down and 2 Garman went
back to punt on his own 44. A low pass
from center prevented the punt but the alert Minster halfback picked up the
ball and scampered to the Bradford 44 for a first down. Big Zeke Tebbe
raced 22 yards in an end around play to the Railroaders 22. Horstman swept end for 10 yards and Schmitmeyer blasted to the 3. Froning then hit Tebbe in the end zone for the tally. Seger's kick was perfect, and Minster led
13-0.
Bradford took the kickoff and began to move
goalward. Bradford's Besecker
began to drive through Minster's left side picking up 5 and 6 yards per
try. With the visitors on the Minster 7
and second down, Coach Maltinsky shifted Dave Seger,
who had been playing a terrific defensive game at right tackle, over to the
left side and the 6-3, 195-pound junior giant, along with Tebbe,
stopped the Railroaders on downs.
Minster took the ball and controlled until time ran out.
