Covington 26 –
Minster 6
The defending Tri-County league champs whipped
a game gang of Minster Wildcats before an estimated crowd of 1,800, the largest
in Minster's short football history.
Featuring a trio of fast backs, some fine
blocking and a good defensive line, the visitors scored 13 points in each the
first and third periods to pick up their third consecutive win, all in league
competition.
Covington recovered an early Minster fumble on
the Minster 45. After a first down, Lin
Wood raced 20 yards around end to the 15.
After Wood bullied his way to the 8, Doug Diltz
swept end to score. The kick was good.
After a poor Minster punt, Diltz
moved the pigskin to the Minster 31 and Wood outran the Minster defenders to
make it 13-0. The kick was wide.
Two long Covington touchdown runs, one of 57
yards by Wood and one of 60 yards by Sheffbuch, were
called back because of penalties in the first canto.
Late in the second quarter Johnny Froning hit Tebbe on a 35-yard
pass play to the Covington 11, but time ran out before the locals could score.
Covington took the second half kickoff and
marched for a score in five plays. The
biggest gain was Wood's 35-yard dash to the Minster 5 from where he scored on
the next play. Wood also kicked the
extra point to make it 20-0.
Covington's last tally came after Froning fumbled a punt on his own 19. After Tobias passed to Wood at the 1, Wood
drove over tackle to score his third touchdown of the evening. The kick was wide.
The Wildcats picked up their only score early
in the final session. Johnny Froning hit three straight passes to move the ball from the
Minster 35 to the Covington 20. Froning then hit Huelskamp for
the score. Seger's kick was blocked by Finfrock.
The defensive work of Froning
was by far the outstanding feature of the contest. The long, lanky junior came up time and again
from his defensive halfback post to stop plays with hard, jarring tackles.
Scoring by quarters:
Covington 13 0 13 0 — 26
Minster 0 0 0 6 — 6
