Piqua
Catholic 33 –
Minster 13
Piqua Catholic’s Cavaliers
scored 27 points in the first half and then stopped Minster’s
second half rally to down the Wildcats 33-13 before a large Minster homecoming
crowd.
A pinpoint passing
attack led by George Brading and some hard running by
Bernard and Pat Staley, led the Cavaliers to their fourth win of the season.
Piqua took the
opening kickoff and had a 7-0 lead in just five plays. The scoring play was a 53-yard end around by
Pat Staley. Bernard Staley kicked the
point.
Brading set up the Cavalier’s second score by intercepting a Froning
aerial on the Cavalier 35 and running the ball to the Orange and Black 11-yard
line. Bernard Staley drove over tackle
for the score and then kicked the point to make it 14-0.
The Cavaliers
scored again in the second quarter as they recovered a Wildcat fumble on the
Minster 45. Bernard Staley drove 33
yards to the 12 and Brading raced around end for the
tally. The kick made the score
21-0. The visitors made it 27-0 late in
the period on a beautiful pass play from Brading to Pat
Staley that covered 51 yards.
The Wildcats, with
Bob Wente leading the way, moved to the Cavalier 23
as the half ended.
Minster’s first
tally began when Rolly Hausfeld
intercepted a Piqua pass on the Cavalier 39 and moved it 10 yards to the
29. Runs by Garman and Horstman led to a
first down at the Piqua seven. With
fourth down and one to go, Garman cracked over for the score to reduce the
Cavalier lead to 27-6.
With Woodward and
B. Staley leading the attack, the visitors moved to the Minster 36. On fourth down Brading
hit B. Staley and the Cavalier back raced over for the score tp expand the lead to 33-6.
Ed Garman,
Minster’s “Mr. Touchdown”, brought the crowd to their feet late in the final
quarter as he smashed over his own right tackle and outran the Piqua defensers for 68 yards and a TD. Seger’s kick was perfect.
The Wildcats
started another drive late in the contest but stalled on the Cavalier 16 as
Piqua held for the 33-13 win.
