Minster Fumbles in St. Rose Opener, 31-7

Minster High School’s gridders realized today that Lima St. Rose knows something besides basketball, after establishing a relationship with the Cardinals on the greensward Saturday evening.

The Cardinals’ ability at the grid pasttime was thrusted upon the Wildcats in a rather convincing 31-7 manner at the Lima Municipal stadium.

But it was not as one-sided as the score might tend to indicate, with the setback being partially attributed to the fumbling committed by Paul Maltinsky’s boys.

In fact, the first two touchdowns recorded by the Cardinals un the initial period were the upshot of Minster bobbles.

One of these occurred midway in the opening period and was recovered by St. Rose on the latter’s 44, from where the Cardinals moved to Minster’s three with Jim Kill slicing off tackle for the touchdown.  Jack O’Connor’s try for the extra point was blocked.

A few moments later Minster again fumbled, this time with St. Rose gaining possession on the Wildcats’ 26 and advancing to the five yard stripe, before Ronnie Klaus went off tackle for the score.  O’Connor’s placement attempt was wide.

Kill and Klaus headed a St. Rose assault in the third period that started on Lima’s 24 and moved to Minster’s 12, with Kill going around left end for the six pointer.

The Wildcats finally got their ground offensive to moving after the next kickoff, advancing all the way from their own 30, mostly through the center of the Cardinal wall and seconday to the three yard marker, with Ted Frericks and Jon Hogenkamp doing the bulk of the ball carrying.  Hogenkamp smashed across for the score while Winner booted the added marker.

Toward the end of the third quarter, St. Rose again moved within the shadows of Minster’s goal posts, with Klaus going over on a 14-yard jaunt after the Cardinals had incurred a penalty for clipping.

In the last period Klaus, who averaged 6.6 yards in a5 tries, intercepted Hogenkamp’s pass, with Tom Webb and himself carrying the pigskin to the one yard line, where Webb pushed it across.  St. Rose’s attempt to carry the extra point across was stopped.

Minster came back again but fumbled with the Cardinal seconds taking over for the balance of the game.

The Wildcats are scheduled to entertain Bradford in a home-raising Tri-County league engagement at Minster next Friday.
