The Minster Wildcats
evened things up with Wapak St. Joe Friday night by
turning back the Knights 38-0 to avenge a 45-0 shellacking administered by the Wapak crew last season.
The Orange and
Black had little trouble in topping the game but outmanned St. Joe as they
scored twice in each of the first two quarters and twice more in the final
period.
The contest was the
second straight in which the Minster defense held the opposition
scoreless. St. Joe never got inside the
Wildcat 40-yard line during the contest.
They were held to a net total of 49 yards while the local defensive unit
intercepted seven St. Joe passes.
With Teddy Frericks and Jon Hogenkamp
leading the way, Minster picked up 403 yards rushing and 37 through the air.
Minster opened the
scoring early in the first quarter. With
the ball on the midfield stripe Hogenkamp took a
handoff from Frericks, slanted over his own laft tackle and cut to the outside and outran the St. Joe
defenders. Winner’s extra point attempt
was wide.
The Wildcats tallied
again in the first stanza as Frericks raced from his
own 35 to the St. Joe 10 before he was brought down from behind. Johnny Horstman moved the oval to the seven
and Rolly Hausfeld drove
off tackle for the score. Winner’s
perfect placement made it 13-0.
Mike Connaughton
intercepted a St. Joe pass on the Minster 40 and returned it to the visitors’
27 to set up the Cats’ third marker. Frericks, Gudorf and Horstman
moved the ball to the six in three plays with Frericks
circling end to score. But a holding
penalty nullified the score and put the ball on the 19-yard line. Frericks was not to
be denied and he passed to Kenny Gudorf in the end
zone. Ron Lusk missed the extra point.
Another pass
interception, this one by Gudorf and returned from
the Minster 45 to the Wapak 35, paved the way for the
next score. After two passes fell
incomplete Frericks hit Connaughton for a first down
on the 19. After another throw failed to
connect, Frericks rambled around his own right end to
score. Winner’s kick was wide, and the
locals led at halftime 25-0.
A pair of fumbles
deep in Wapak territory prevented the Wildcats from
scoring in the third quarter. Maltinsky emptied his bench in the final period and the
Orange and Black scored twice.
Connaughton
intercepted a St. Joe serial on the Knights 12 and returned it to the one from
where Horstman scored on the third play of the final period.
Jim Cull, 104-pound
sophomore halfback, scored the final touchdown with five minutes remaining as
he smashed his way over from the two.
Winner’s kick made it 38-0. The
Wildcat second stringers had the ball on the visitors’ ten as the final gun
sounded.
