Coach Paul Maltinsky and his Wildcat grid squad are looking forward to
four straight Tri-County league games following a 25-0 defeat at the hands of
the Coldwater Cavaliers at the Mercer county town Friday night.
Although beaten
rather soundly in Friday’s encounter the locals were in no way disgraced. After giving up a pair of rather early
touchdowns in the opening period the Cats settled down and played the powerful
Cavaliers on almost even terms through the remainder of the fray.
Minster’s big,
veteran line, led by Jim Brown, Jim Brandewie and Joe
Bornhorst, certainly proved a worthy foe for the
Coldwater line which outweighed them about 20 pounds per man. Johnny Horstman also turned in a topnotch
performance, both on offense and defense.
Ted Frericks and Mike Connaughton aggravated old knee injuries
in the first half and Maltinsky wisely kept them out
of action in the second half. Bob Prenger, defensive tackle, has been lost to the Orange and Black
for the rest of the season due to an injured cartilage in his knee. Prenger did not
play Friday night.
Minster fell behind
6-0 two plays after the kickoff as Denny Bonifas cut
off tackle and raced 50 yards for the tally.
Fred Schenking’s attempt placement was
wide. Later in the first quarter Bonifas went 44 yards on the same play to make it
12-0. Schenking’s
kick was wide again.
Then the Wildcat
defense tightened and the Maltinskymen began an
offensive march of their own. The drive
started after Horstman returned a Coldwater punt from the Minster 20 to the
28. With Horstman and Hogenkamp hitting for yardageover
the tackles, the Cats picked up four first downs and advanced to the Coldwater
18. Three plays put the oval on the nine
but Hausfeld was thrown for a yard loss on fourth
down and the Cavaliers took over.
A 15-yard penalty
moved the ball to the Minster 26 and led to the Cavaliers’ third tally. Dan Harris cut off tackle to the seven and
then raced around end to score with only 28 seconds left in the half. Schenking’s kick
was blocked, and the score read 18-0 at intermission.
The victors scored
their final touchdown in the last quarter as Harris scored from the 13-yard
line. Schenking’s
kick was good.
Minster moved deep
into Coldwater territory late in the last quarter but
the Cavaliers intercepted a Hogenkamp pass as the gun
sounded.
Friday night the
Cats will be at home to Ansonia.
