PIQUA – Ted Frericks and Jon Hogenkamp scored
two touchdowns apiece as the Wildcats notched their first win of the season
Saturday night by topping a game but outsized Piqua Catholic eleven 25-6 at
Piqua.
The Cavaliers,
defending league champs, were mauled in their first three games of the season,
but were really fired up for their Homecoming and Dads’ night contest with the
Orange and Black.
Both Frericks and Hogenkamp gained
more rushing yardage than the entire Piqua squad with Frericks
picking up 121 yards in nine carries and Hogenkamp
eight yards on his 20 attempts. Piqua
managed only 110 yards rushing.
After taking the
opening kickoff Minster marched to the Piqua 18 before a holding penalty
stalled the drive. The Cavaliers picked
up a first down before Mellinger punted to the Minster 25 and Dahlinghaus returned to the 30. The locals were penalized to the 25 on the
first play. Minster then shifted into
the single wing with Frericks cutting off tackle,
breaking for the outside, and outrunning all pursuers for a 75-yard touchdown
gallop. The extra point attempt was
blocked.
Piqua gambled on a
fourth-and-one play on the Minster 19 and the Cat defense threw Guillozet for a yard loss to pave the way for the second
score. Nine plays later Hogenkamp went over from the one for the tally. Zimmerer’s lick was
perfect, and the lead was 13-0.
The Orange and
Black advances to the Piqua 17 midway through the second quarter but Jay Hogenkamp fumbled, and Piqua recovered. With two minutes left in the half the
Wildcats were knocking at the door again but two passes fell
incomplete and Piqua took over as the half ended.
The fired-up
Cavaliers blocked John Seger’s punt and recovered on the Minster 25 to set up
their first touchdown of the year. Piqua
moved to the three and with fourth down and two to go Norekiss
dove over for the score. The point
attempt was blocked.
Late in the quarter
the Wildcats started a drive from their own 33 following a punt. After Frericks
gained 23 yards Hogenkamp and Dahlinghaus
moved the ball to the seven as the quarter ended. On the second play of the final period Frericks smashed through the middle for the score. The point attempt was wide.
The hard-charging
Minster line partially blocked a Piqua punt to set up the final
six-pointer. The Cats picked up a pair
of first downs before Hogenkamp broke loose for 25
yards to the Cavalier 10. Two more
plunges put the ball on the three and Hogenkamp
bucked over for the score. The point attempt
was blocked.
With a comfortable 25-6
lead Coach Paul Maltinsky cleared his bench for the fnal eight minutes.
Next Friday the
locals travel to Ansonia for a league game.
