MINSTER – The
Wildcats defensive unit treated the Homecoming queen and king and their court
and a large crowd to a heads-up and rugged exhibition that led to a 22-0 win
over Waynesfield’s Tigers last Thursday night.
The Cats’ defensive
team that features Jon Hogenkamp, Bob Clune, John Boerger, John Seger and Jim Bohman
on the line, and Don Bowerman, Ken Gudorf, Jay Hogenkamp, Dave Wetzel, Jerry Huelsman and Ted Frericks in the secondary, hold the Tigers to only four
first downs and a net total of 45 yards rushing. The Orange and Black defenders also set up
every score with a couple of fumble recoveries and an intercepted pass. Jay Hogenkamp was
the largest culprit as he personally picked up two fumbles and a pair of
passes.
The Tigers’ 5-4-2
defense completely throttled the Cats in the opening quarter and Minster did not
record a first down until a march to the Tiger 31 early in the second
session. Wetzel was thrown for an
11-yard loss on an attempted end run and after two passes went astray, Zimmerer punted to the visitors’ 17.
Williams was thrown
back to the ten on the first play and a second down pass fell incomplete. The pass from center on an attempted punt
play sailed out of the end zone for a safety to give Minster a 2-0 lead.
The Cats took the
ensuing kickoff and moved to the 19 but were stopped as Russ Shaw intercepted a
jump pass. Ted Frericks
came right back to intercept a long Waynesfield aerial and ran it back to the
45. Minster marched to the 21 but
Williams picked off a Frericks’ toss to stop the
drive and the half ended.
With six minutes
left in the third period, Jay Hogenkamp dropped on a
Waynesfield fumble on the visitors’ 25. Dahlinghaus drove to the 23 and Jon Hogenkamp
raced around his right end for a tally. Frericks plunged for the point that made it 9-0.
On the first play after
the kickoff Don Bowerman intercepted a pass on the Tigers’ 25. Hogenkamp picked up
14 yards to the 11 and Dahlinghaus shot through the
middle of the line for the score. Zimmerer’s point attempt was blocked.
Early in the final
period Jay Hogenkamp recovered another fumble, this
time on the Tigers’ 29. The Orange and
Black moved for two first downs to the four and Frericks
raced around end for the score. Zimmerer kick the point and Minster led 22-0.
Coach Maltinsky then cleared the bench and every squad member saw
action.
Friday night the
Wildcats end their season here against Versailles. Versailles clinched at least a share of the
Tri-County league crown with a 24-6 win over Marion last week. Friday night will mark the last game for
seven seniors including John Boerger, Jerry Huelsman,
John Seger, Jim Dahlinghaus, Jon Hogenkamp,
Ed Zimmerer and Don Luthman.
