MINSTER – An inspired
Bradford Railroader football team, paced by a pair of halfbacks, defeated the
Minster Wildcats 21-0 in a game played here last Friday.
The Railroader
onslaught was paced by halfbacks Charlie Bunnell and Jerry Besecker
with Bunnell crossing into paydirt twice and Besecker
gaining the payoff stripe once. A safety
late in the opening stanza accounted for the total tally.
The battle of the
two league favorites saw the Railroaders succeed in keeping the ball in Wildcat
territory the larger part of the battle.
The Railroader offensive was aided by good blocking.
A Wildcat fumble set
up Bradford’s first touchdown when R. Canan recovered
on the Wildcats’ 22. Straight forward
carrying scored with Besecker going over from nine
yards out. Two points were added on a
safety when Minster’s Dave Wetzel took a punt on his own ten, but in attempting
to evade tacklers ran back into his own end zone and was dropped.
After several
abortive attempts to gain yardage, the Railroaders put on a sustained drive
from the Wildcats’ 41 to add the marker with Bunnell circling right end from
the six for the tally. The speedy
halfback took the other route, around left end, to add the lone extra point of
the evening.
The final Bradford
touchdown came late in the third quarter after a Minster fumble on the Wildcats’
18. A pass from quarterback Paul Smith
to Kneisley netted 14 of the remaining yards and
Bunnell plunged the final three for the score.
An offsides penalty canceled the extra point try.
The Wildcats travel
to Lima Friday of this week for an engagement with Lima Central Catholic, a
combination of the several parish high schools in that city.
