Coldwater Throws For 48-0 Victory Over Minster

MINSTER    With Coldwater’s prolific aerial attack coming into Minster while the Wildcats awaited with both their original starting quarterback and his backup sidelined with injuries, expectations were that the Cavaliers would have a significant advantage in the passing game.  And so it would come to be, as in the first half alone, Coldwater racked up 314 yards of passing offense while holding Minster without a completion.  This led to a 42-0 halftime lead on the way to a 48-0 Cavalier victory.

Troubles began on the first play from scrimmage for the Wildcats, as they took to the air and the pass was intercepted by Tony Harlamert.  But Coldwater returned the favor on the next play, with a downfield pass picked off by Reid Heitkamp for the Wildcats.

But the offense soon kicked into gear for Coldwater, who scored on all six of their subsequent possessions of the first half.  Their first score came on a 40-yard completion from Cory Klenke to Adam Homan.

The second Coldwater score was one for the record book.  Klenke hit Harlamert for a 36-yard scoring strike.  With the reception, Tony broke the state record for consecutive games with a pass reception with a 36-game streak, passing Jimmy Jewett of New Lebanon Dixie for the top position in this OHSAA state record book category.

Coldwater scored one more time in the first quarter, this time on a 5-yard Harlamert touchdown run, to make the lead 21-0 at the change of quarter.  After their initial interception, the Cavaliers dominated Minster from that point onward.

“If you are going to play down the road, you can’t take weeks off,” commented Coldwater coach John Reed.  “They prepared well, and it showed.”

Coldwater kept up the onslaught in the second quarter.  Keith Wenning started the second stanza by completing a 55-yard touchdown pass to Dusty Rutschilling.  Klenke took back over at quarterback the rest of the half and scored on a 30-yard touchdown run as well as hooking up with Harlmert for another scoring pass, this time from five yards out to make the halftime score 42-0.

The second half was a contest between the respective JV squads.  Jacob Pohl scored on a 6-yard fourth quarter run to put the final points on the board for the night.  Minster’s best scoring opportunity of the night came in the final minutes after Kody Stoner broke loose for a 63-yard run.  But time ran out with the Wildcats on the Coldwater 30-yard line leaving the final score 48-0.

Coach Reed was sympathetic to the Wildcats’ injury situation.  “I know that Minster is playing without a lot of their best players.  They have a lot of kids hurt,” stated Reed.  “It’s difficult to win in this league when you’re healthy, let alone to win in this league when you’re not healthy.”

Coldwater has now won the last 16 meetings in this series by an average of 23 points per game and has won the last two games by a combined score of 108-0.

Next week Coldwater, now 9-0, returns home to host the 3-6 New Bremen Cardinals.  Minster (5-4) will seek to lock up a playoff berth with a victory when they travel to St. Henry to play the 5-4 Redskins.
