Huge Second Quarter Leads to 35-0 Coldwater Victory

COLDWATER    Perhaps suffering a hangover from last week’s first loss of the season, the Coldwater Cavaliers got off to a slow start against the visiting Minster Wildcats.  However, they exploded for five touchdowns during an eleven-minute span late in the first half to secure a 35-0 victory.

The Minster defense started strong, stopping the first three Coldwater drives.  They forced a Coldwater punt, Lou Fullenkamp intercepted a pass at the Minster 22-yard line, and Coldwater was stopped on a fourth down running play at the Wildcat 28-yard line.  Unfortunately for Minster, the Coldwater defense held the Wildcat offense to a total of negative five yards on their own first four possessions.

John Reed’s Cavalier offense then kicked into high gear, scoring touchdowns on their last five possessions of the first half.

Starting at the Minster 39-yard line, Coldwater needed just six plays to record the first score of the game when Jacob Pohl struck paydirt on a seven-yard run as the clock expired to end the first quarter.

It didn’t take long for the Cavaliers to start expanding their lead.  Ross Wermert returned a Wildcat punt all the way to the Minster 8-yard line, and three plays later Keith Wenning tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to Adam Rammel to make the lead 14-0.

Another stand by the defense allowed Coldwater to start their next drive at the Minster 36-yard line.  Once again it required only three plays for the Cavaliers to score when Wenning found Reese Klenke on a 25-yard scoring strike.

Coldwater’s next possession was their longest scoring drive on the night.  The possession started with 28-, 3- and 14-yard passes from Wenning to Rammel.  It was completed with a 12-yard run by Wenning followed by an 18-yard Wenning scoring scamper to complete the 75-yard drive.

The Cavaliers received the ball one last time with less than two minutes remaining in the half.  It took them only four plays and 35 seconds to march 55 yards for the final score of the night, a 17 yard pass from Wenning to Rammel.  Troy Otten kicked his fifth successful extra point of the half to make the score 35-0.

The second half was a scoreless affair featuring a variety of players from both squads.  With 7:26 remaining in the contest, Jake Winner recovered a Coldwater fumble at the Minster 38-yard line to start the most successful Wildcat drive of the night.  Minster launched a clock-eating nineteen play drive during which they gained 59 of their 68 yards on the night.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the game clock expired while they were at the Coldwater three-yard line.

Coldwater has now won the last 16 meetings in this series by an average of 24 points per game and has won the last three games by a combined score of 143-0.

Next week Coldwater, now 8-1, travels to play the 5-4 New Bremen Cardinals.  Minster (1-8) wraps up their season by hosting the 6-3 St. Henry Redskins.
