Early Strikes Lead to Minster 48-19 Win over Parkway

MINSTER - The Minster Wildcats scored on their first five possessions to take a 35-0 lead over the homestanding Parkway Panthers. Parkway responded with a late second quarter drive and another score to start the second half to reduce the deficit to 35-13, but the Wildcats tacked on two more third quarter scores in a 49-20 victory.

On the opening kickoff James Kuehner forced a fumble for the Wildcats that was recovered by Ian Clune at the Panther 23-yard line. A few plays later Carson Kaylor threw a 15-yard strike to Brendan Halpin and Minster led 7-0.

“That’s a great way to start,” stated Minster coach Seth Whiting, “We were happy with our kids. They came out and executed right away.”

The Wildcat defense would force two three-and-outs and the offense would score two more times in the opening period to increase the lead to 21-0. A 60-yard drive was capped by a two-yard Kuehner touchdown run, and late in the quarter Kaylor tossed short to Taylor Fancher, who weaved his way through the Parkway defense for a 58-yard score.

Minster scored twice early in the second quarter to go up 34-0. Kaylor rushed eight yards for the first score and threw a short pass that Beckham Stephey ran in from 36 yards out for the second.

Parkway responded with a big play of their own, as Perry Schwieterman threw deep and found Isaac Beverage for a 71-yard score.

The Wildcats needed one more score to start the second half with a running clock, and they achieved it with under a minute left before the break. Fancher scored on a 5-yard run and Minster led 41-6.

The Wildcats extended the lead to 48-6 in the third quarter as Kaylor threw a 49-yard bomb to Halpin. The rest of the scoring belonged to the Panthers. In the third period, Schwieterman found Beverage on another deep throw, this time 49 yards in length. In the final quarter, Rhen Carpenter ran four straight times for 57 yards with the touchdown coming from nine yards out.

Minster amassed 452 total yards. Kaylor completed 14 of 17 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite receiver was Tyler Bergman who caught six balls for 78 yards.

“We wanted to run the ball more but they were hammering eight guys in the box,” explained Whiting. “So instead of beating our had against the wall, just throw.”

Parkway’s main weapon was Isaac Beverage, who caught six passes for 153 yards and two scores.

Minster’s record improves to 4-0 (2-0 MAC). The Wildcats remain at home to play 4-0 Coldwater (2-0 MAC) next Friday in a battle of the unbeatens. Parkway’s record drops to 1-3 (0-2 MAC). The Panthers host 2-2 (0-2 MAC) Versailles next week.
